Basma Foundation for Social Development participates in a study day in Zerkten on the theme “A new start for education and training in the Zerkten basin” to support the “New Education Project” in the Zerkten basin
Zerkten (Al Hoceima region) — December 14, 2025
As part of efforts to establish a public school system based on quality and equity, the rural community of Zerkten hosted a study day on the theme “A new start for education and training for young people in the Zerkten basin in the Al Hoceima region.” This meeting was dedicated to discussing the mechanisms for implementing the “New Education Project,” an initiative of the Friends of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Marrakech, in partnership with the Dar Al Talib and Dar Al Taliba associations in Zerkten.
The seminar was marked by the participation of the Basma Foundation for Social Development, whose director, Mr. Adel Tantoun, gave a presentation entitled “The Basma Foundation and the Management of Charitable and Humanitarian Projects.” During its presentation, the foundation emphasized the need to adopt a clear management methodology and well-defined stages to ensure the success of humanitarian and educational interventions in the region.
In this context, the foundation proposed integrated model project cards aimed at strengthening the “school basin” structure in the Zerkten hub, including:
• Environmental school dormitories: to provide safe and sustainable shelter for students.
• Empowerment spaces: creation of a multidisciplinary hall for cultural development and vocational training.
• Reconstruction: construction and rehabilitation of two educational institutions damaged by the earthquake.
• Environment and services: environmental sanitation projects, a psychological and social support program, and a digital platform to support education.
This “new education project” comes in response to Morocco’s reform dynamic (Framework Law 51.17 and Roadmap 2022-2026) and aims primarily to:
1. Overcoming the lack of basic education, especially among rural girls.
2. Combating school dropout and ensuring the continuity of the educational path for students from primary school to high school.
3. Overcoming the repercussions of the earthquake by improving infrastructure and mobilizing partner support for a sustainable educational renaissance.
The study day concluded with an agreement to launch the project’s strategic plan, develop a strategy for partnerships and mobilize funding, and prepare a synthetic report diagnosing the reality of the education system in the Zerkten community and neighboring communities, ensuring that these recommendations are translated into concrete action that serves the youth of the Al-Hooz region.
It should be noted that the Zerkten educational complex was launched in 2011, in partnership between the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of National Education, the Zerkten community, and civil society. This comprehensive vision has achieved tangible results, including:
• An increase in the number of students enrolled in preparatory education from 100 in 2011 to more than 1,000 in 2025.
• The opening of a new vocational high school in the community during the current year, ensuring the continuity of education for the region’s children in their local environment.
• The project’s success in breaking isolation and ensuring safe access for students coming from neighboring villages.
